Service Above Self: Why Every Community Needs More Leaders Who Serve

There are a lot of organizations you can join. Some help you build your business. Others help you grow your network. But there are very few that challenge you to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

That's why I'm excited to launch the Service Above Self Podcast with my friend and fellow Rotarian, Deborah Morton.

Our mission is simple: shine a light on the incredible people who are serving their communities through Rotary.

Every week, we'll sit down with local Rotarians who are leading projects, solving problems, building relationships, and creating real impact. These are stories that deserve to be heard—not because they're looking for recognition, but because they remind us that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they choose to serve.

What Is Rotary?

One of the questions I hear most often is, "What is Rotary?"

Rotary is a global network of people committed to making their communities—and the world—a better place. Whether it's supporting local schools, fighting disease, providing clean water, mentoring young leaders, or helping families in need, Rotary members believe that service creates stronger communities.

At the heart of Rotary is a simple but powerful guide known as the Four-Way Test:

• Is it the truth?

• Is it fair to all concerned?

• Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

• Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Imagine what our communities would look like if more people made decisions using those four questions.

Community Matters

I've always believed that success isn't just measured by what we accomplish—it's measured by the lives we impact.

When you surround yourself with people who are committed to serving others, your perspective changes. You begin to see opportunities instead of obstacles. You find purpose beyond yourself. And you realize that real leadership starts with giving.

That's why I often say, Community Matters.

The strongest communities aren't built by one person. They're built by people who exchange ideas, take action, and work together toward something bigger than themselves.
